Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the DLI Downloader

This FAQ is made up mainly of questions DLID users have asked at various times. Since DLID 0.23,when you install the software, an FAQ which is a print-out of this page, is also installed with the User Manual. However, this page is the more current version. Most issues are resolved in the user manual or in this FAQ. In almost all cases, server outages at the DLI's IISc site or security and network policies at the user's end tend to be the problems. This FAQ is comprehensive. To save your time, please use it fully, before asking for support.

This FAQ is grouped under the following heads:

Current version, (un)Installation and System details

  1. What is the current version of DLID? Which platforms are supported?
DLID 0.23. It has three flavors- DLID Complete, DLID Lite and DLID Toy. DLID now works on almost all Windows versions, Linux, OS X and on all platforms that have Java and WebStart facility installed. If you have a version older than DLID 0.23:
    • If you have DLID 0.21 Beta or Final, you can continue using it, if you don't need printing or the IUCAA site books. Between the two, 0.21 Final has a smaller disk and memory footprint and also addresses a couple of issues on 64 bit Windows 7 machines.
    • If you have DLID 0.2 or older, you must uninstall it and install DLID 0.23.
    • DLID 0.3 will be completely updatable and an uninstall will not be needed for updates.
    • To install, first run the uninstaller if you have an older version. Then, please grab the new installer relevant to your platform and your requirements from the main
      site
or mirror 1 or mirror 2 and follow the installation instructions there. If you have questions, please read this DLID FAQ page fully, the installation instructions and the User Manual. If you still have questions, please send an email to dli.downloader[[at]]yahoo.com
  2.
  3. Versions and platforms supported:

DLI Downloader 0.23 comes in three versions, Complete, Lite and Toy.
    • DLID Complete is supported on almost all Windows versions and most Linux distributions. It has the same features on both. This is the preferred and comprehensive version.
    • DLID Lite is also supported on Windows and Linux. It provides basic downloading and retains most of the features of DLID Complete while adding configurable proxy support. Check out its features to see if it is right for you.
    • DLID Toy is an all Java reimplementation of DLID 0.23. It retains a minimal set of features, but can provide quick and convenient downloading from both IISc and IUCAA sites. It is available on OS X (10.3+) and on all platforms that have Java(1.5+), with WebStart enabled.
Note: The User Manual discusses only DLID Complete. The FAQs and Support sites discuss all three versions.
  4.
  5. Difficulty uninstalling a previous version of DLID?
You may get messages like: “cannot load library" or "a library is missing". This usually happens with Windows XP and is external to the DLID. The fix is given in the installation instructions; or you can see the "Trouble with...Uninstalling" item in the main distribution site. Download the archive and follow the instructions in it.
  6.

    Features

  7. What's new in DLI Downloader 0.23 Complete:

    • Support for IUCAA mirror and RIP IIIT site: The IUCAA mirror is fully supported under the
"Collections" menu, in lieu of the IIIT site. This the biggest change that prompted the early release of DLI Downloader 0.23. We have had confirmation that the IIIT site has not only gone down, but will also not come back up in the same form. Those books are being moved to the IISc site and will be available over time.
    • Linux version: This is of course the next big news.
    • PDF Printing and Viewing separately supported You can now make PDFs most suited for onscreen reading, in the actual size of the original, by choosing "Actual Size" in the "Page Size" options under the "Mode menu". Similarly, you can choose A4 (close to North American 'letter' size), to make printable PDFs. Previously, everything was flattened to the A4 size. Note that this is different from yourreformatting PDF books in different ways, after they have been made, because the images have already been resampled by then.
    • Downloading and PDF making and other tune-ups Downloading is now faster and cleaner, as also the PDF making. Some bugs have also been fixed, and some non-DLID issues have been addressed.
    • Using new1 and IUCAA You have to make sure you have barcodes from these servers before putting them into DLID. Note that new1 is automatically included in DLID 0.23, but you have to specify IUCAA in the Collections menu, if that is where your book lies. See an earlier FAQ for info on the new1 cluster.
    • IIIT Catalog is included, though IIIT site is defunct?
Yes. Because the books are being moved to IISC and will appear there. After the move, the IIIT catalog will just be a portion of the IISC catalog. Since the barcodes are the same and lookup is the same, the IIIT catalog is useful to find books even now. Once all the moves are completed and DLI has streamlined, if and when there is a DLID 0.3, we will make fresh catalogs and distribute them with the new release. In any case, the DLID catalogs are far more important than access software like the DLID program!
    • Status of DLID 0.21Final and DLID 0.21Beta: If you don't need to use the IUCAA mirror, you can still continue to use them and we'll support them. If you want to upgrade to DLID 0.23, you will have the uninstall 0.21 and reinstall 0.23, using the instructions given above for installing 0,21. The process is the same.
    • TFIC Fair Use terms apply The same fair use terms specified in our TFICbooks and site, apply, as relevant, to the DLID 0.2x and its usage.
  8.
  9. Features introduced in DLID 0.2 and 0.21:
    • Status Messages and Status codes: Fault tolerance features allow DLID to deal with many problems with the DLI servers. The status messages and codes DLID generates, give vital information about what's happening. If you are running into failed downloads from causes other than DLI servers going down or your internet connection failing, be sure to look up the error codes reported in fuchsia, from the right bottom corner, in the User Manual. They will often tell you what's wrong, such as errors in system configuration. Only in the case of extreme and unmentioned errors will you need to contact us; also if you do contact us, giving the error code goes a long way in our helping you quickly.
    •
    • Data Integrity Features and "Data/Cache corrupted" messages:Since 0.2, there has been data integrity checking. DLID expects to solely manage the DLID Books folder. Don't manage it yourself, i.e. by moving things around etc. Once a downloaded has succeeded and a PDF book has been created, you can move or alter the books as you like. The PDFs are not managed by DLID. When a download fails, the cached pages are moved to the "open" cache in the DLID Books folder. You may view the pages, but not alter them in anyway. If you alter them, DLID will annul the resumption, when you try to resume. Note that, while most programs tend to hide their caches, DLID makes its cache visible, as a convenience feature, so that you can read at ;east portions of a book. However, you can't change the cache's contents. The "Preview" folder may also not be altered in most cases.
    •
    • Faults are clearly isolated. If something goes wrong or a download fails, DLID can tell you exactly what went wrong and where, through its error messages and codes. The DLID generates over 50 messages that cover almost all possible circumstances. Please see the User Manual for more details.

  10. How fast is the DLI Downloader? Really fast. If you have an internet connection faster than 1Mbps, all the bottleneck will be at the DLI end and DLID will maintain the highest speed that the server will allow. The fastest speed we have seen for IUCAA is producing a 20 MB, 330 page book in under 30s including PDF writing time. IISc allows only a fraction of this speed. The Linux version is also a bit faster than the Windows version. Note that different scanning centers and scanners have used different scan qualities. So, even for books of the same page size, with similar content, the scans of pages in the different books can range from 5K to 1MB in size. The total size+total number of pages together with the current server load and your computer's available resources (and your net speed if you are slower than 1Mbps) determine how fast your book will come at any given time. So, it is hard to generalize. But, on average, you should expect even a 100MB, 1000 page book from the IISC to arrive in some time short of an hour.Note that, DLID's allowing only one download at a given time, in order to prevent abuse of the DLI, doesn't mean that you could get faster downloads, if parallel downloads were allowed in it. DLID fetches the current book at whatever maximum speed DLI will allow at that time. So, several concurrent downloads with different instances of the DLID, even if it were allowed, will not be any faster than downloading several books one after the other. But, always download only what you need!
  11.
  12. Features coming up in DLID 0.3:

If and when there is a DLID 0.3, it will include several things:
    • Fresh catalogs- the catalogs are more important than the DLID program itself!
    • Support for additional non-DLI collections has been superseded. Originally, we planned to include more repositories and
not just the DLI in DLID 0.3. Now, however, we are in the process of providing books from other collections outright in the TFIC site. This
is easier for DLID users, because the books can be directly downloaded without needing to use DLID 0.3 at all! But, we will provide some
integration between 0.3 and the TFIC.
    • Complete support for new1 server at DLI IISc, which houses the newer and transferred books.
    • Integration with the DLIE browser- If the DLI has streamlined by then, we will tie our DLID 0.3 with DLIE 0.1. DLIE 0.1 is a complete application with an integrated clickable DLI catalog browser, which lets you read and search books in our 9 language complete DLI catalogs. The frequent changes at the DLI have long delayed the DLIE's release.
    • Automatic updates- You will not need to download and reinstall any more.
  13. DLID Lite features
    • What is new? Configurable proxy support. Also, DLID Lite is suitable for users who don't need all the features and users with roaming profiles, users uprgrading from Vista to Win 7 and having certain Windows related problems etc.
    • What is in? All basic features like SAFE and FAST mode, ability to switch between IUCAA and IISc sites, PDF making choices, page selection etc. In performance terms, it is just as fast as DLID Complete. It is available on Windows and Linux and through Wine and Winebottler, on OS X (though you have to set up Wine and Winebottler yourself).
    • What is out? Resumption, user preferences, error recovery and adaptive network engine etc. It is not resilient when the DLI servers go down. Unlike the detailed status messages and error codes of DLID Complete, the "status messages" in this version, are fewer in number and give only basic details.

  14. DLID Toy features
    • What's new? OS X support and an all Java implementation. This Java version makes DLID available on any platform with the WebStart feature. Also, the ability to safely suspend a download that is active. You don't need to choose a collection. It automatically checks both collections.
    • What is in? A minimal set of features which are just enough to get a book from the DLI. You get only basic status messages like a book is found or is corrupted etc.
    • What is out? Many features like choosing the collection, FAST mode, resumption, page selection, catalogues and so on.
  15. Can DLID 0.23 work through proxies?DLID Lite has explicit configuration of proxy servers. DLID Complete and DLID Toy should also work through proxies. But, as proxy structures and security policies differ, if they don't work for you, please use DLID Lite.
  16.
  17. DLID 0.2x is a large download with a large disk footprint, though such a program can be less than 1 MB and not have so many restrictions. Why?OR: What components are there inside the DLID 0.2x?

DLID Toy is indeed about 1 MB and is quite serviceable. But, for DLID Complete and DLID Lite, there are good reasons for the footprint. The various restrictions such as only one instance of DLID running only one download at a time, are actually a form of self-censoring, so as to prevent inconsiderate users from swamping the DLI's servers. The DLID suite is somewhat larger than it needs to be, though its memory footprint and CPU requirements are hassle-free. There are three reasons. To speed-up release, we reused some elements from a different codebase, whereas had we started from scractch, DLID would have been much smaller in disk footprint, but also delayed by months. To keep DLID completely legal and distributable in any form we needed, we could use only components we owned or had licensed and not just any available component. We had to provide the simplest possible installation and usage features to help even users new to computer and internet usage.

As for what components lie inside the DLID 0.2x, there is not much mystery. It includes two propietary technologies, one licensed and another owned by PRL, and three popular libraries, such for the user interface and the pdf maker. It also uses a peculiar architecture mixing C and Java, so that we didn't have to reimplement many portions to produce a homogeneous design. Due to the two proprietary technologies, although DLID is given away free of cost, it is closed source and is not free to disassemble, extend and redistribute with mere attribution of the original to the original maker, in the sense of the "free software" often provided under the GNU General Public License or other licenses.
  18.

    How to use:

  19. How to "resume" a download:

To resume a download, you need to just press the "Resume" button once. Don't input a barcode and page selection. DLID always remembers the failed download, its book, the pages you chose etc., and even if a download keeps failing several times after getting a few pages each time, DLID can stably continue until all pages have been retrieved. If you enter anything into the barcode or page fields, those values will be happily ignored. As soon as a resumption starts, it will reset these fields to the sample/default values. Note the following facts regarding resumptions:
    • Only failed downloads marked as resumable at the time of failure, can be resumed. In general, this will be the case, but not always.
    • Only a single failed download is saved and is resumable. This is done mainly to avoid repetitive failures within a short interval and to dissuade download frenzies, as the DLI is a finite resource. Downloads should fail only rarely, as the DLI ought to have a reasonable up time. So, if a download fails, it is best to try getting that book or other books sometime later. You can of course try to download from the other collection without any wait.
    • When a download fails and is resumable, the pages available are cached. You can view the cache contents but not move them. If you alter them, the download will no longer be resumable.
    • When you resume a download, your current state, such as which collection, speed mode, preview mode etc, you were in, are automatically saved. When the resumption operation is complete and an outcome is declared as success or failure, and your settings are restored. For example, if you resumed an IISc book, but were using IIIT in FAST mode with PREVIEW before, after the resumption, you will be restored to IIIT in FAST mode with PREVIEW.
  20.
  21. Where should the DLID Books folder go?

You may choose the location only in DLID 0.23 Complete. Make sure it is always in a place where you have privileges to, and other programs will not interfere with DLID's managing that folder. In DLID Lite and DLID Toy, the books to a "DLID Books" folder in the user's home.
  22.
  23. Differences in using DLID 0.23 Lite
    • Configuring proxy servers: In the File Menu, hit the Proxy setting button. Now, the Barcode field changes to accept a proxy server address and the Pages field changes to accept a port. Enter your settings and hit the download button. If and only if the settings work, the proxy will be set, and you will return to the download functions. To delete a proxy you have already set, simply type "NOPROXY" as your proxy server. Proxy settings are not persistent. You have to enter them each time you run DLID Lite. This is done to help people who connect through various networks.
    • The books are always created in a "DLID Books" folder in the user's home. E.g. On Windows 7, this is a folder in your "Documents" library.
    • You can switch modes and collections and choose pages and PDF settings as you do in DLID Complete. However, you cannot resume failed downloads.
    • There are only a few status messages covering major events than the exhaustive message set of DLID Complete.
    • No preview, no adaptive network engine or 60 different error codes. But, the essentials are there for error detection.
    • In performance terms, is just as fast as DLID Complete. Only, it is not as resilient when the DLI servers go down.
  24.
  25. Differences in using DLID Toy
    • You may download only whole books.
    • Books are put in the "DLID Books" folder in the user's home directory.
    • There is no need for setting collections. DLID Toy will first try to get the book from IUCAA and if that doesn't work, switch to IISc.

    • There is only one mode- SAFE.

    • To safely stop long-lived downloads, use the "Stop DL" feature in the File menu.
    • DLID Toy gives only very general status messages.

    • It also doesn't have the catalogs built in. You will have to use the online catalogs at here and here. But, DLID Toy will certainly suffice for basic usage.

  26.
  27. If you are a network user logging on to a Windows client machine and want to use DLID 0.23 Complete:

That is you are on a Windows client, on a network with a Windows Server or other server, data shares and roaming profiles.... and your data storage quota is mounted from a central data cluster. Firstly, you may need permission from your systems personnel to install DLID 0.23 Complete. Secondly, if you are allowed to install it, be sure to choose a proper "DLID Books" folder, as soon as the status message advises you to, in the very first run of DLID 0.23 Complete. Apart from these two considerations, DLID 0.23 Complete should work normally. Your other options are to use DLID 0.23 Lite or DLID 0.23 Toy.

  28.

Details about the DLI, TFIC and other repositories

  29. What is the new1 collection at DLI-IISc and is it supported by DLID 0.2x?

The new1 servers contain a combination of the most recent books scanned at the IISc site, books from their partners and books being moved from other DLI sites like the defunct DLI-CDAC and IIIT sites. DLID versions 0.2 and above do support this collection, transparent to the user. But, the cataloging information for a number of books in the new1 collection, particularly the new arrivals, is muddled. So, certain books that you seek to download, may not be fetched. If several books you try don't come through, feel free to send us an email with the scan code and title and we'll check it out. If we already have it in our collection or the TFIC collection and you have a serious and urgent need for the book, we can make it available to you directly and you don't have to download it. See the support guidelines below.
  30.
  31. The status of the DLI IIIT site:

The TFIC group has had confirmation that the IIIT site has ceased to exist. Its books have been moved to the IISc site and have started
appearing under the new1 collection. Eventually, all the books would be available through the IISc site itself, and possibly through another digital library.

  32.
  33. New books at TFIC:

The TFIC collection is making many more books from many sources, including their own, directly downloadable through their site and elsewhere. Check the site and their primary home often.

  34.
  35. Books from www.ulib.org:

www.ulib.org is a partner of the DLI, and the Indian books in it, may be presumed to be DLI books. Barcodes found at ulib.org for an
Indian/DLI bookmust generally work in the DLID, but you mmight get a "Check Barcode" error. If you do, make sure that you set the collection setting to IIIT or IISc rightly before trying to download with DLID. If one collection doesn't work, retry with the other. Ulib also has its own mirror elsewhere, and also puts its stuff on www.archive.org. If you have set the collection rightly, make sure you are typing or pasting the barcode correctly (without any blanks, hidden characters etc.), though DLID does validate for such things. If the download still fails, it might mean that the catalog information is not available through the DLI server, though the book is there. Another possibility: DLI's catalogs are full of errors. That is why, we make our own catalogs with "scan availabilities" and thousands of corrections; the "Sanskrit/Indology" catalogs of 13,000 books are built into DLID. (Check your start/program folder.) The complete 9-language catalog of 250,000 books will be released with DLID 0.3. Also, note that DLID supports only the DLI's cataloging method.

  36.

    Troubleshooting:

  37. The MOST probable causes of download failure:

The most probable cause for a download failure is that DLI site going down, before or during the download. The next most probable cause, is your internet connection failing. If you repeatedly see other failures, check your admin/security rights, network configuration such as proxies etc. Then read the manual and this FAQ. If nothing helps, after reading the support guidelines below, send us an email with a clear description of the issue.

  38.
  39. "The scan status given for a book in the catalog is notaccurate."

You may have found books marked available not being available and vice versa. As the catalog says, this was a snapshot taken in July 2010. Since then, there have been lots of changes at the DLI. DLI might have removed some books for copyright issues, while scanning and placing more books online. At the moment you checked, some servers might have gone down. Thus, there are many possibilities and the catalogs give a generally accurate picture, while they may not be right for every book-after all DLI staff are working hard daily; their work must reflect in the catalogs. Once the DLI streamlines with the IIIT and CDAC roll in, we will make new catalogs. But note that another benefit of the catalogs is that they correct hundreds of errors in the DLI's catalogs, and are much easier to search and are available offline, from your own computer.

  40.
  41. If you see a "Check barcode" message, but the book is listed as available in the DLID catalogs or at DLI:

This happens when you have chosen the IUCAA mirror in the Collections menu and when a book from the IISc site is not available at the IUCAA mirror. The IUCAA mirror only has some of the IISc books. Its catalogs can be mismatched with the IISc catalogs causing this error. Switch back to the IISc site in the Collections menu and get the book from IISc.

  42.
  43. "DLID 0.2 starts, shows a splash screen and then closes. I am not able to download."
    Simply move to DLID 0.23.

  44.
  45. A download failed, but the cached pages seem out of sequence!
Example scenario: You asked to download pages 1-250 of a book. About 70 pages were downloaded and then it failed. You opened the cache and found that the 70 pages were spread out all over the 250 pages, like 1, 10, 56, 181, 77 etc. and not pages 1-70. This can certainly happen, but it is normal program behavior. It can happen when you have been downloading in FAST mode and the program failed. As an optimization, like other programs of this nature, DLID will always try to get as many pages concurrently, as the DLI servers will allow. So, depending on the server's response, the pages may arrive in parallel, in any order. This doesn't happen in the SAFE mode. Pages are fetched sequentially. However, failures in FAST mode don't happen often as the DLID does a lot of calibration prior to and during each download. If failures recur, it automatically goes to SAFE mode, or internally uses one of the slower speeds of the FAST mode.

  46.
  47. "I am unable to download books from the IUCAA /IISc Site for any barcode. For example, after starting a download, I ran the command "netstat -a 20". It gave me these statistics. TCP bchennim:1744 www.new.dli.ernet.in:http TIME_WAIT TCP bchennim:1747
www.new.dli.ernet.in:http ; ESTABLISH TCP bchennim:1748 9.190.235.16:2967 SYN_SENT. After some time DLID shows the message "Check Web access. Offline?"? But with the same connection I am able to download the books from the IUCAA site. Why am I having this issue?
    "
Actually, you are able to download from the IISc site with a different connection, not the same one. Each scheduled download spawns a whole bunch of connections to the servers you point to, either at IISc or at IUCAA. What the scenario above means is that DLID is able to connect to and "talk" to the IISc server only to the point of making a connection, but is not being serviced promptly and properly by the server, and the server is failing the DLID's calibration tests. But, this can also be due to congestion or a lossy connection at your end or along the way at any of the hops, and not purely a server fault. Hence the warning message from DLID.
  48.
  49. "I have a problem in resuming failed downloads. When a download failed and the status message said it was resumable, I waited for some time and clicked on "Resume Saved DL", in the mode menu. But, it failed again with this message: "Check the barcode and try again". At other times it said "DL Failed! Retry." I am unable to Resume the previous download."
Are you on Windows 7? The first event can be a problem, but the second can be normal program behavior. The second may only mean that the DLI site is still down and your download may only be resumed after some hours. Often, the DLI site needs several hours to come back up, and a failed download may not be immediately resumable, i.e. you may not be able to resume only a short while after it failed. Retrying some hours later, will resolve the second case.  The first case, though, arises rarely and only on some peculiar configurations, particularly on Win 7. It is completely external to DLI Downloader. It is due to your Windows restricting access by DLI Downloader to certain system resources. It doesn't even happen all the time. When DLI's servers are doing fine, it won't even happen. One solution that often works, but not always, is to run DLID as an administrator. Actually, it can be fixed using two patches, but it is an elaborate fix and isn't worth the trouble doing it by hand yourself. Instead, if a download failed, just give several hours for the DLI sites to recover, and try the download again. Note that resumption is supposed to be used once in a blue moon and not regularly. If many downloads fail in succession, you should simply restart another time and not press on. We plan to change the resumption mechanism in DLID 0.3. You can subscribe to the support sites to watch for the DLID 0.3 release announcement, if and when it happens.
  50.
  51. "If I try to resume a download, I get a "Data/Cache corrupted" message."
This can happen due to users inadvertently altering the DLID's cache, or due to inconsistent access privileges or due to data corruption in the DLID's cache, by another program. See bullet #2 in FAQ 6.
  52.
  53. "I can reach a book's url with my browser, but DLID says I should check whether I am or the DLID is offline."

This is related to the FAQ 24 above. The DLID is intended to fetch books quickly from the DLI when your network conditions and the server load at the DLI are both conducive. By design, it is not intended to run non-stop for 10-15 hours toiling with a bad connection to a swamped server to fetch a small 200 page book, though this is how many programs would behave, i.e. if they can talk to the server, they will keep the connection and keep downloading. DLID instead, will profile the connection, and decide to "timeout" and declare failure. Instead of running for so long, non-stop, it is much better to conserve resources, declare failure and then quickly fetch the book at another time. This is also mentioned in the user manual. Note that the DLI includes a number of servers at each site. So, even if you are able to pull up the catalog information from the main server, the particular data server holding your book, might be swamped at that moment, resulting in this error. Note that this message needs to be accompanied by the error code 20, "General System Failure", for the reason given here, to be true.
  54.
  55. What happens when there are errors in the pages (i.e. TIFF images) and some pages get culled by DLID?
Whatever can be salvaged will be made into a PDF e-book. However, this book will be marked by its barcode and not by its title, and an error code will be shown in DLID, to indicate that pages had to be culled, and the book may or may not be reliable.
  56.
  57. Have trouble setting or changing the DLID Books folder and also with DLID "remembering" your previous download state for resumptions? You may need to run DLID as an administrator.
  58.
  59. Now, in 2011, why are there so many difficulties in using the DLI, the DLID and getting books?

The most frequent reason why a book may not download properly, is a server outage or other issue at DLI. This happens frequently at IISc. Wrongly entered catalog details is the next problem. It is almost never a DLID problem. Plus, the DLI itself is in a state of flux these days. They are consolidating everything to the IISc site from the other places. The IIIT site is now gone. With their new1 server cluster appearing, and these migrations, their catalog is muddled. A lot of these things ought to eventually settle down. We are an independent group distinct from the DLI. So, these events are beyond our control and we cannot update DLID to workaround all this, unless DLI sorts things out first. You the user, and we, may only wait until such time.
  60.

    Miscellaneous questions:

  61. Price of DLID?
If you are curious, the cost price, i.e. without any profit mark up, for the Windows DLID and Linux DLID, would each be about $60 per copy. Please don't ask us if DLID is intrictate enough or valuable enough to warrant that price or how far more useful software is available for even less:), as the DLID will always be free. The $60 figure is just a real calculation which shows that credible software is really not inexpensive to make anymore.

  63. Is DLID 0.2x a regular product from PR Labs? What exactly is the connection? I need to know because I have restrictions on what I may use on my computers.
PRL is a legitimate and typical R&D outfit, and DLID is not an official or professional product of PRL. It is a "labor of love" for some of us at PRL, undertaken in the interest of furthering the study of Indian antiquities amongst scholars and general readers alike. Though it is not an official product, it is taken extremely seriously by our group, and we have infused considerable time, effort and expense into it, and we even provide prompt support for DLID users even though it is not through our regular channels. It is because PRL is a legitimate entity that we have to be very careful in ensuring all the components we use in DLID and DLIE and their potential use are all legitimate and hence the larger footprint of the DLID. We don't know what your restrictions on usage are, but, we make no demands of users or claim clientage or any such thing. The only terms are what you agree to in the license/ToU, which efficetively state that it is free and unrestricted for individual academic and educational use and ask, in the public interest, that you not abuse the DLI, such as through mass downloads. If the DLI itself were to someday provide the services DLID does, thereby obsoleting the DLID, we would be most happy.

    Support:

  65. We MAY provide books for you a.k.a. Guidelines for asking us for support:
DLID is free software and we try to provide prompt support at all times, despite our other work at PR Labs. So, in order that we may help you and other users better, please follow these guidelines at all times. Read the manual first and then this FAQ. Most issues are resolved by these docs. If you still have trouble, check if DLID has the same problem at another time, such as 1 or more hours later, when server conditions have improved at the DLI. Contact us only at this point. Clearly mention the scan code, the site location, your system configuration, what you were trying to do etc., so that we can respond better. State the problem you are having succintly in the subject line itself. You will get an auto-response first, before we respond to you. If you have omitted doing some of the steps mentioned in the auto-response, or haven't provided all the info we ask for, please resend your support request, marking the subject line with "RESEND:..." and then your issue in a few words. If you need a book urgently for a legitimate research or study purpose, mark your subject line with "URGENT-NEED A BOOK", then the collection name, and then the scan code , like this: "URGENT-NEED A BOOK IIIT 210310410510". Describe the problems you are having in the email. More importantly, state why you need the book urgently. You don't have to sacrifice your privacy, but you must give us enough information about who you really are and why you need the book, to know that you make a genuine request. E.g. I research at ___ and need this for a conference; I have a book deadline for ____; I have to submit a term paper__ etc. Once convinced it is a genuine request, we will download the book for you, if it is available and just not accessible to DLID 0.21 due to cataloging error and make it available to you. Note that it must be legitimate in our jurisdiction and yours for us to fetch and distribute this particular book. Please note that you are on the honor system here. If you make up a story to just get a book sooner, we have no way of checking it, nor any desire to check it, and might even get you the book; but other readers like you will be affected by the delay and you might get blacklisted. Eventually, you may make a genuine request and get ignored. We will also tell Bill Gates about you. Plus, bad karma will haunt you forever :) You can obviously ask for a book only once in a while! So, ask for only what you need the most. Before emailing, remember to check out the TFIC site to see if we already have it.

License, ToU, Copyright, Intellectual Property and Fair use policies:

  67. Copyright at the DLI and intellectual properties contained in DLID
Copyright and other intellectual property holdings are important in the context of a digital library or software to access it, particularly as the DLI, unlike many repositories, does have a large number of books still under copyright and only released explicitly to the DLI for
preservation and distribution. Please be aware of this distinction when you get books. We are in no way responsible for what you do with the DLID program, as specified in the license during install. ToU are found in the User Manual and in brief on the side of this page. We also adhere to the TFIC group's Fair Use Policy, as applicable to the DLID and materials relevant to it, or generated by it.
As for the DLID itself, it does use several elements that have been released to the public domain such as pictures including the Raja Ravi Varma art, strictly under "fair use" terms. The propietary technologies used by it are either owned by us outright or have been duly licensed from its owners specifically for such usage. Being so rigorously legal is what causes DLID to be a little bigger and heavier than it needs to be. But, we prefer paying this small price. If you happen to own any material we use and are not happy with how we use it, please let us know and we'll stop using them immediately.
